The Virtual Curtains Rise for this Anniversary Student Theater Showcase

Events & Festivals

PHILIPPINES — In the midst of the raging pandemic, a time when we live and exist in a world of distance and isolation, we have seen how creativity and the arts have continued to foster even in the digital space, giving a temporary respite for the art community whose homes have since closed down because of the restrictions brought by the health crisis.

In its 40th year, the PUP Sining-lahi Polyrepertory, the resident theater organization of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines takes the virtual stage with the online presentation of the first phase (Unang Yugto: Ala Una) of the organization’s newest season,“Dasdas”.

“The Odds in Time”, written by Mary Ann Guanlao and directed by Bea Vigilia, trails two friends who found themselves meeting again every Tuesday on a virtual space, despite a less than gracious parting of ways.

For the organization, the production is “a reminder that resting is not a crime, instead, a recess, a break that every human needs.” With this virtual showcase the long, illustrious tradition of the organization seeks to continue to influence, not just the PUP community but also new viewers and artists in the persistence and continuing power of the new platform, the virtual world.

They note, “We aim to encourage and motivate people to take a break, breathe, and smile in spite of the struggles we’re facing due to pandemic conditions.”

The production is set to be live-streamed on a two-day showcase startingn tomorrow, May 20 & 21, 2021 at 3:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 9:00 PM respectively via the PUP Sining-Lahi Polyrepertory’s Official Facebook page and will be posted on Youtube.

The show will be free to watch on the FB group that will be provided after registering through https://forms.gle/DBCjBNcuqtPa8Ej16
