Spy Flick Serenaded by The Beatles: ‘Argylle’ Unveils Its Soundtrack

Screening Room

MANILA, Philippines—At the core of the “Argylle” soundtrack and score lies The Beatles’ latest and final release, “Now and Then.” In this espionage thriller, Bryce Dallas Howard takes on the role of Elly Conway, a reclusive author of best-selling espionage novels. Elly’s serene nights at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie, are disrupted when the plots of her fictional books, centered around secret agent Argylle, align with the actions of a real-life spy organization.

Teamed up with the cat-allergic spy Aidan (played by Sam Rockwell), Elly, with Alfie in tow, races around the globe to outpace killers, blurring the lines between her fictional world and reality. The star-studded cast includes Henry Cavill, John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Samuel L. Jackson, Ariana DeBose, and Dua Lipa.

Music plays a crucial role in director Matthew Vaughn’s films, serving as a vital storytelling element. In “Argylle,” Vaughn sought to create a captivating screen romance between Elly Conway and Aidan, accentuated by banter and chemistry. As their relationship deepens in the movie, one particular song, “Now and Then,” takes center stage, a previously unreleased Beatles track.

The son of Beatles producer George Martin, Giles Martin, proposed the song to Vaughn, and with advanced technology, the unfinished demo recorded by John Lennon in 1978 was transformed into a fully-fledged band number with the involvement of surviving Beatles McCartney and Ringo Starr. Vaughn, impressed by the song’s perfect fit, incorporated it into the film’s score.

The inclusion of “Now and Then” became a testament to Vaughn’s deep admiration for the Beatles and even led to a starstruck meeting with Paul McCartney.

“Argylle” is set to hit cinemas on January 31, offering an Apple Original Films presentation in association with MARV, a Cloudy production, and distributed by Universal Pictures.
