Alert! It’s time to for a refresher binge! Streaming giant, Netflix, announces today that the superhero dark comedy, The Umbrella Academy is set to return on July 31, 2020. The second season will feature the original cast reprising their roles, including Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Justin H. Min.
Steve Blackman, behind Fargo and Altered Carbon will also return as showrunner and executive producer, along with Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, and co-executive producers Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. The White Violin, The Kraken, Spaceboy, The Rumor, The Seance and The Boy will return in 10 one-hour episodes produced by UCP (Universal Content Production) for the global streaming service.
In February of 2019, Netflix first released the genre-bending series featuring the misadventures of the dysfunctional band of superheroes in a live-action series based on the “Umbrella Academy” graphic novel series created by Gerard Way, with the illustration of Gabriel Bá, under Dark Horse Comics.
The Umbrella Academy follows the fateful day in 1989, when forty-three infants were inexplicably born to random, unconnected women, without any signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven of these infants were adopted by a billionaire who builds The Umbrella Academy and prepares the “children” to save the world.
The six surviving members then reunite upon the news of their adoptive father’s passing and are enjoined to work together to solve this mystery. But the estranged family begins to come apart due with the clash of their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.
Netflix releases the teaser inspired by fan-favorite first episode scene, with homemade clips of the cast dancing to Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now”. Watch this teaser below:
