Embracing the Essence of Family
Director Ángel Manuel Soto sheds light on the integral Mexican-American Reyes family, who takes center stage in the film’s narrative. In this origin tale, a notable departure from typical superhero narratives where the hero keeps their identity concealed, the secret unfolds right before the Reyes family’s eyes.

Soto explains, “Unlike other superhero movies where the hero keeps the secret from everybody around him, the secret really happens in front of the family.” Gareth [Dunnet-Alcocer, screenwriter] always said, “Good luck trying to hide a secret from your mom in a Latino household, they always know!’ Embracing this dynamic created a distinctive journey, wherein the family actively contributes to the adventure. Rather than being passive characters or mere recipients of rescue, they play an integral role in shaping the superhero’s journey.”
The Humor
According to Mexican-born screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, “The tone absolutely has to be humorous.” He humorously adds, “I’ve yet to meet a Mexican person who lacks a sense of humor, so it’s almost a given that the movie would carry a comedic touch. The uniqueness of the humor it brings is truly delightful, and it draws inspiration from the early Blue Beetle comics’ essence. These comics feature a hero who’s relatable due to his own imperfections.”
Jovial Exploration of Superpowers
Jaime Reyes embarks on a one-of-a-kind journey as a fresh hero donning a completely novel suit. Producer John Rickard shares, “Can he soar through the skies? Absolutely. Is his strength impressive? No doubt. Do we feature grand-scale action sequences? Certainly.’ Rickard further emphasizes, ‘However, it’s the suit’s distinctive capabilities, unlike anything else in the DC Universe, that bring forth its incredibly captivating allure. Blue Beetle’s superpowers know no bounds due to this suit. He stands as a 20-something equipped with a costume that can materialize anything he envisions. Thus, the question arises – how does this young individual wield such powers? He draws inspiration from his surroundings, tapping into his pop culture knowledge and everyday experiences.”

He adds, “Our action-packed sequences within ‘Blue Beetle’ are undeniably influenced by the intricate combinations seen in gaming culture, resulting in a feeling akin to a living video game experience. Those familiar with the gaming world will unmistakably appreciate the intricate nuances.”
An all-original city for a new Super Hero
In the comics, Jaime Reyes and his family reside in El Paso, Texas. However, the film’s creators decided to fashion a brand-new locale specifically for Blue Beetle’s world – the distinctive Palmera City. Producer Zev Foreman highlights, “They aimed to provide Jaime and Blue Beetle with a unique city of their own, much akin to Superman’s Metropolis and The Flash’s Central City. This concept resonated with us.”
Foreman continues, “It injected vibrancy and a burst of colors. It introduced notions of water’s interplay with the surroundings. The city’s facets, reminiscent of Miami’s diverse aspects in terms of people, affluence, and more, sparked remarkable possibilities to craft an utterly distinctive superhero environment. This decision played a pivotal role in shaping the ambiance, music, emotions, and lighting – an extraordinary choice.”
In ‘Blue Beetle,’ recent college graduate Jaime Reyes (Maridueña) returns home with aspirations, only to discover his hometown transformed. While seeking his purpose, fate intervenes when Jaime stumbles upon an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.
