Directed by Um Tae-hwa, “Concrete Utopia” draws inspiration from Part 2 of the popular webtoon “Joyful Outcast” (“Pleasant Neighbors”). Starring an ensemble of renowned Korean actors including Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-jun, Park Bo-young, Park Ji-hu, Kim Do-yoon, and Kim Sun-young, this disaster thriller delves into the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake. The story unfolds as survivors gather at Hwang Gung Apartments, the sole building left standing in earthquake-ravaged Seoul.

The film serves as a thought-provoking parable, depicting the gradual descent of its characters into merciless tribalism, mirroring contemporary global events in an eerie manner.

“Concrete Utopia” has received the honor of being chosen by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) to represent South Korea in the race for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2024 Academy Awards. Additionally, it is set to make its North American premiere and gala presentation at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 9.
