A Journey Towards Self-Acceptance in “Lisa Frankenstein”, According to Director Zelda Williams

Screening Room

MANILA, Philippines—When director Zelda Williams screened Lisa Frankenstein, she asked the focus group about the movie’s main message. One response stood out: “that you can be a completely unhinged weirdo and still deserve to be loved!” In the film, Lisa Swallows, portrayed by Kathryn Newton, navigates a new school and life after her mother’s death.

She finds solace in an abandoned cemetery where she unwittingly reanimates a young man’s corpse, played by Cole Sprouse. With the help of her step-sister Taffy (Liza Soberano), Lisa embarks on a quest to restore his humanity, leading to a darkly funny and bizarrely romantic tale inspired by classics like “Bride of Frankenstein” and ’80s favorites.

The film, written by Diablo Cody and directed by Williams, fosters an atmosphere of warmth and efficiency on set, impressing both Cody and the cast. Williams hopes to remind audiences to embrace their eccentricities and celebrate their uniqueness.

As “Lisa Frankenstein” hits cinemas this Valentine’s Day, get ready for a wild ride of undead horror romance like no other.
