NEW YORK, USA — It’s that time of the year when the most glamorous and stunning displays of fashion walk down the MET Gala red carpet, where the internet’s fashion polices report the night’s biggest wins and questionable losses in style. Through the years, the MET Gala red carpet has played host to some of the biggest and most culture-shaping looks ever to debut on the world fashion stage by some of the most decorated Hollywood celebrities known to man.
This year, SSI brands rock up the event with huge celebrity names, dolling up some of pop culture’s most influential people in only the most fashion-forward pieces that follow the theme “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”.
Here are some of our favorites:
Saint Laurent
Perhaps the biggest win for K-Pop fans of the night is Rosé making her MET debut with none other than the creative director of Saint Laurent accompanying her. Olivia Rodrigo, Hailey Bieber, Indya Moore, Kit Harrington, Zoe Kravitz, Anja Rubik, and Talia Ryder also sported the most stunning Saint Laurent ensembles at the event.
Gucci
Gucci dressed Sienna Miller, Serena Williams and James Corden – three talents that were featured in the Gucci Beloved handbag campaign – and more for the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this evening, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Costume Institute and the opening of the exhibit “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.”
James Corden wore a custom Gucci black silk floral jacquard two button peak lapel three-piece tuxedo with a white piquet bib evening shirt, black silk bowtie and black leather lace-ups.
Serena Williams wore a custom Gucci silver lace corseted bodysuit with lace neckline and open back embroidered with pink rhinestone and sequin stars with silver lace leggings, silver lace gloves, silver metallic leather high heel platform sandals and a silver metallic leather Jackie 1961 mini bag with metallic piston closure. She completed her look with a cream, pink and black feather degradé long cape. Alexis Ohanian wore a Gucci black wool silk GG stripe two button grosgrain peak lapel jacket with a white evening shirt, black wool mohair trousers, white and silver iridescent lace bowtie and black leather lace-ups.
Sienna Miller wore a Gucci rose beige lace long sleeve gown with translucent sequin embroidered floral motif and crystal harness detail with a rose beige ostrich feather coat, silver metallic leather high heel platform sandals and a pale pink satin GG Marmont clutch. She completed her look with Gucci High Jewelry Hortus Deliciarum earrings in white gold with diamonds and a Gucci High Jewelry Hortus Deliciarum ring in white gold, blue-green tourmaline and diamonds.
Tommy Hilfiger
The legends have, of course, arrived at the fashion event of the year. Tommy and Dee Hilfiger attended the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit on September 13, 2021 in New York City to celebrate the opening of Part One – In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. The exhibition demonstrates a new expression of American fashion, focusing on how clothing can evoke deeper social and emotional connections. The evening was co-chaired by Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka, with Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour as honorary chairs.
Tommy Hilfiger was joined by fashion designer and wife, Dee Hilfiger, GRAMMY-nominated, multi-platinum rapper, Jack Harlow and Tony-nominated playwright and actor, Jeremy O. Harris.
“Fashion has always been influenced by the world around it, but it underwent one of its biggest transformations in the wake of the unprecedented events last year,” said Tommy Hilfiger. “As designers and brands, we had to completely rethink who we are and what we stand for. What has inspired me on this journey of rebuilding is the opportunity to create a more sustainable, equitable and inclusive future for the next generation of fashion. Tonight, being reunited with the rest of our industry, I was reminded that our collective efforts will make that future possible.”
Tommy Hilfiger wore a custom TOMMY HILFIGER x Denis Frison single-breasted tuxedo blazer made from upcycled vintage denim with red and blue striped silk patchwork lining and grosgrain lapels, cuffs, pocket flaps, upcycled vintage denim high waisted pants with a grosgrain waistband and side stripe, along with a white evening shirt and black bow tie.
Dee Hilfiger wore a high neck, long-sleeved, all-over red sequin embroidered gown from her private wardrobe, customized by TOMMY HILFIGER with hand-stitched contrast stripes and bugle bead embroidery.
Jack Harlow wore a custom TOMMY HILFIGER bespoke deep rouge and navy striped velvet double-breasted tuxedo blazer with black silk lapels and covered button fastenings, deep rouge and navy striped tuxedo pants with a silk side stripe detail, and a black cotton tuxedo dinner shirt.
Jeremy O. Harris wore a custom TOMMY HILFIGER deep dandelion yellow floor-length regatta jacket lined in foil silver with opera coat proportions, pockets and technical details inspired by sailing outerwear, pleated high waisted midnight navy wool silk pants with the signature logo waistband, and a midnight navy open-front wrap cotton shirt.
LOEWE
Actor Dan Levy graced the red carpet with a statement. The Canadian actor, writer, and director, more famously known in Schitt’s Creek, Levy wore a bespoke LOEWE printed leg of mutton sleeves cotton piqué polo with detailed embroidery and handbeading, printed twill de laine trousers with hand-beading, paired with a white leather T Pouch and JW Anderson AW2010 boots.
The bespoke look contains the work of LGBTQ activist, the artist David Wojnarowicz (1954-1992). Imagined as what a “gay superhero” might wear, the outfit takes inspiration from two of the artist’s seminal works – Fuck You Faggot Fucker, 1984, and Untitled (One Day This Kid), 1990/91.
The LOEWE bespoke polo and trousers depicts two men kissing, from an artwork whose title came from a crude homophobic cartoon the artist had come across (Fuck You Faggot Fucker, 1984). Rather than feed on the message of hate, the work celebrates same-sex love. Photos of Wojnarowicz and his friends surround the couple, amid a background of world maps, indicating arbitrary borders and divisions the queer community faced.
The LOEWE T-Pouch clutch illustrates a portrait of the artist as a sweet, innocent child (Untitled (One Day This Kid…), 1990-91). Surrounding texts predict his future as homosexual, deemed an outcast by society, asserting visibility for queer people — exposing the hatred and bias experienced daily, while celebrating love and joy.
In honor of this glorious collaboration, LOEWE has made a donation to Visual AIDS, an organization Wojnarowicz supported, that continues to promote AIDS awareness and education.
