MANILA, Philippines—ASICS SPORTSTYLE is delighted to announce the release of the EX89™ sneaker. The GEL-EXTREME basketball shoe from 1989 served as inspiration for this low-top silhouette.

Toshikazu Kayano developed it as his first design project with ASICS. Perhaps better known for his GEL-KAYANO™ running shoe series, this silhouette became a watershed moment for ASICS footwear, paving the way for technological breakthroughs.

During the late 1980s, the majority of performance basketball shoes had white bases. The GEL-EXTREME, the EX89™ sneaker’s forefather, was one of the first renegades to emerge with spirited color blocking inspired by basketball team uniforms. The shoe returns this season with its traditional leather construction and team-specific color palettes. The updated model will also be available in a variety of options that have been updated with modern lifestyle materials.
The ASICS EX89™ recently made its debut at Culture Cartel 2022, the highly anticipated street culture convention. These new kicks were put to the test, and the perfect slam dunk shot was captured with the EX89™, available only at the ASICS basketball court booth at Culture Cartel.

The shoe was originally designed with GEL™ technology for impact absorption when jumping or rebounding. This iteration features a sculpted heel shape and the FF BLAST™ cushioning system. These features contribute to the shoe remaining lighter and more comfortable for everyday use.
Kayano took inspiration from his first business trip to the United States in 1987 to create the shoe’s outsole. Its formation is meant to mirror the view of a city layout when looking at it from above. The result in the late 1980s was better traction during quick transitions and abrupt stops on the hardwood.

The ASICS SPORTSTYLE EX89™ will be available for ₱6,490 on ASICS online and in ASICS stores in blue and green colourways. The black and grey colourways of the EX89™ are FootLocker Exclusive and will be available at FootLocker online and stores.
