Dwein Baltazar’s ‘Third World Romance’ Takes the Spotlight as Cinemalaya 19 Concludes

MANILA, Philippines—A masterpiece of romance penned and helmed by Dwein Baltazar, featuring the stellar cast of Carlo Aquino and Charlie Dizon, elegantly wraps up the esteemed Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. The closing film is set to be screened on August 12, 2023, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

Titled “Third World Romance (Love on a Budget),” the closing film casts its spotlight upon the lives of Britney, an audacious cashier navigating life’s grocery aisle, and Alvin, a carefree bagger, as they courageously strive for contentment amidst the gritty backdrop of their blue-collar existence and the somber shadows of the pandemic.

This tender narrative delves into their pursuit of happiness despite confronting formidable challenges. Yet, as Britney faces a fateful choice between love and survival, the intricate tale unfolds, unraveling profound lessons about the price of genuine happiness.

Baltazar, a luminary in the realms of direction, screenwriting, and editing, has etched her name with works such as “Gusto Kita With All My Hypothalamus,” “Ode to Nothing,” “Exes Baggage,” and “Mamay Umeng,” among other noteworthy endeavors. Her artistic journey commenced as a stylist for director Chito S. Roño’s film “Emir” in 2010. Her debut film, “Mamay Umeng,” made its grand debut in 2012, garnering the prestigious Best Picture award at the 2013 Jeonju Film Festival and securing a nomination at the 2013 Bombay International Film Festival.

The ensemble cast boasts the talents of luminaries such as Ana Abad Santos, Gardo Versoza, Archi Adamos, Iyah Mina, Esnyr Ranollo, Xilhouete, Brian Black, Lady Morgana, Junjun Quintana, and Donna Cariaga, enhancing the film’s artistic tapestry.
