It’s Official! The World is Finally Back in Order as ‘Hamilton’ Heads to the Philippine Stage

Stage & Performing Arts

MANILA, Philippines—It’s official! History is happening in Manila! The award-winning American musical, “Hamilton” will make its first Asian tour stop in Manila this coming September, set to be staged in The Theatre at Solaire.

After the recent sneak peek released by GMG Productions, the creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, himself, brought the announcement early this afternoon, just a day after World Theater Day, through the production’s official social media and of course, the theater community and the Internet, as a whole, is in excitement.

“Hamilton” is a ground-breaking musical based on Ron Chernow’s biography of one of America’s founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. The show revolves around the American revolution and highlights the life of its titular character, from being an immigrant to becoming the first treasury of state secretary, and founding Father. Of this, the production showcased his life as a husband, lawyer, and politician.

The musical is a melting pot of all musical genres, which was helmed by the Puerto Rican playwright and the original Alexander Hamilton cast, Miranda with the musical arrangement of Alex Lacamoire and musical direction of Thomas Kail.

The musical premiered off Broadway in 2015 and transitioned to Broadway the same year. It then received several accolades, including Grammy, Billboard, and Tony awards, as a reflection of its triumph. From there, the musical also went on an array of tours, including those in Chicago in 2016, London’s West End in 2017, the US Tour from 2017 through 2019, Los Angeles in 2021, Australia and Germany in 2022, and this year in Canada and Asia, premiering in Manila as highlighted by Miranda.

In 2020, Hamilton made its cinematic appearance with the release of an Original Broadway cast performance on Disney+.

Joining Miranda in the original Broadway cast members are Philippa Soo as Eliza Schuyler, Renee Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds, Leslie Odom Jr. as Arron Burr, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Daveed Digs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, Anthony Ramos as John Laurence/Philip Hamilton, Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, and Jonathan Groff as George III.
