Following a series of surprises served up at the beginning of the year, and even in the face of the ongoing crisis, pop rock group juan karlos has consistently beefed up their artistic portfolio now with the recent release of new music video the song, “Kalawakan“, off the group’s first ever full-length album under MCA Music.
The young group started 2020 strong with the release of “Sampaguita“, marking a celebrated collaboration with Filipino rap legend Gloc-9, which eventually led to the release of the much-anticipated drop of “Diwa“,
If you have been following the group for a while now, “Kalawakan” is a single that has already been performed in a number of live shows, along with a lyric video on their official YouTube channel.
“What I do with some of my songs is that I try to create a story in my mind, then I write a song as a soundtrack of that story,” JK Labajo shares of the creative process in writing for the album.
For “Kalawakan“. the video follows an intergalactic traveler as he navigates through an explosion of colorful backdrops and timelines, that later on reveals a scope of emotions that touch on mental health and grief. juan karlos isn’t just a good storyteller lyrics-wise––half the battle of creating music is being able to express it properly.
“I wrote it for my girlfriend Maureen,” he shares. His deep vocal styling shifts easily into his signature higher register that match the emotions enveloping the quiet but powerful anthem that pays homage to love. The song, while demonstrating a perfect showcase for Labajo’s range as a vocalist, the accompanying music video is just the cherry on top.
‘Kalawakan’ is included to ‘Diwa’, juan karlos’ first album, released last March 20 under MCA Music. It’s currently available on Spotify, Apple Music, and all major digital streaming platforms.
