Screening Room

Yes! Josep is coming!!!

Filipino-American stand-up comic Jo Koy goes back to his roots as he brings his latest comedy special to the Philippines with Jo Koy: In His Elements. Known and well-loved for his satiric and tongue-in-cheek bits about the Filipino-American experience, Koy promises to go all-out not just in quipping about his now-famous mom (with her Louis Vuittons and Skyflakes), his global introduction to tabo (water dipper), and the Filipino obsession with karaoke, but also in bringing homegrown talents to the global stage through streaming service, Netflix.

In an announcement made earlier this month, the 48-year-old award-winning comedian teased, “I’m so excited to announce that my 3rd @netflix special “In His Elements” premieres June 12. We brought Netflix to the Philippines! Let’s go!!

In the video, Koy, who already had two Comedy Central and two Netflix specials tucked nicely under his belt, enthused, “This is that one special special where I was like, I need to go back home, the Philippines. I need to show people where my mom’s from.” He adds, “And I had this crazy idea, let me bring a bunch of my friends that are Filipino that lived in America, that haven’t even been back to the Philippines.”

“Let me show you how beautiful the country is, let’s show how beautiful the people are, and let’s just do a show. Everything about this special is Filipino–the cameraman, the people in the audience, the people that owned the venue. Let’s embrace our culture and have a great time, and I can’t wait for the world to see.” He ended, “I’m proud of this one. And my mom is gonna be even more proud, because I finally brought Netflix to the Philippines.”

Apart from the upcoming special, Koy has also been reported earlier this year to bring more of his life experiences on a comedy film titled Easter Sunday, produced for the big screen by Amblin Partners and Dan Lin’s Rideback.

The film is set around a family gathering celebrating the Catholic holiday tradition of Easter. Koy is said to be the executive producer, alongside Ken Cheng, who is also writing the screenplay. Joining the production is the newly formed Crab Club, Inc., which was created by Cheng, Jimmy O. Yang and Jessica Gao.
