‘Parasite’ Makes Historic Win at the 2020 SAG Awards

Bong Joon Ho’s compelling and genre-bending social commentary, Parasite marked yet another win as it collected the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the recently concluded Screen Actors Guild Awards held today, January 20, 2020, in Los Angeles, California, further gaining momentum for Neon’s Oscars campaign.

Parasite is hailed as the first foreign film to win the award after its 26 editions, after only being the second non-English film nominated in the peer-based awards show after Roberto Benigni’s Life is Beautiful over two decades ago. The film’s celebrated director was joined by actors Lee Sun Gyun, Choi Woo Sik, Park So Dam, and Lee Jung Eun.

Lead actor, Song Kang Ho led the cast in accepting the award, saying, “Although the title [of the film] is ‘Parasite‘, I think it’s about co-existence and how we can all live together. To be honored with the Best Ensemble award, it occurs to me that maybe we haven’t created such a bad movie. I’m so honored to receive this award in front of such amazing actors I admire. I will never forget this beautiful night.”

Earlier this month, Parasite also won South Korea’s very first Golden Globe award in the Best Foreign Language Film category, an emphatic triumph that only solidified, if not, affirmed their status at the Oscars, happening this February 9th.

Also at the 26th SAG Awards, Joaquin Phoenix bagged the Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for the box-office and critical success Joker, while Renée Zellweger copped the award for Lead Actress for Judy. Brad Pitt took home the award for Actor in a Supporting Role for the Quentin Tarantino epic, Once upon a Time in Hollywood. Laura Dern was then given the trophy for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for the Netflix original film, Marriage Story.

Meanwhile, one of the most applauded awards given during the show was the Lifetime Achievement Award given to legendary actor Robert De Niro, who also appeared in the nominated Martin Scorsese epic, The Irishman.
