Meet Mindy Kaling’s Teenage Self in this New Netflix Coming-of-Age Series ‘Never Have I Ever’

On the heels of the success of her recent well-received film Last Night at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, famed actress, comedienne and multi-hyphenate Mindy Kaling returns for her first collab with entertainment platform Netflix with the upcoming series Never Have I Ever. Coming to the streaming powerhouse this April 27, Kaling, with showrunner and writer, Lang Fisher tells a new coming-of-age comedy about the complicated life of a modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl.

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi Vishwakumar

The ten-episode series is slated to star newcomer, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi Vishwakumar, an overachieving high school sophomore whose short fuse for a temper gets her into a lot of difficult situations. With her are new and upcoming actors Ramona Young, Lee Rodriguez, Darren Barnet, Jaren Lewinson, Poorna Jagannathan, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Richa Moorjani, among others in a tale that is loosely inspired by the Kaling’s childhood to young adolescent years.

In her quest to mark a memorable sophomore year, Devi gets her sights on Paxton Hall-Yoshida, Sherman Oks High’s famous swim-team jock. It is in this young, unapologetic mission that Devi navigates the highs and lows of highschool life–with eye-opening experiences on friendships, culture, sexuality, and society, in general.

This is Us’ Darren Barnet stars as Paxton, the school jock.

Never Have I Ever is created by Kaling as executive producer, with Fisher also as executive producer, showrunner and writer, with projects like Brooklyn Nine Nine, The Mindy Project, and 30 Rock tucked under her belt. The Universal Television project is also executive produced by 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein, David Miner, and Tristram Shapeero.
